BC031 - Q&A: El Larson on the early years of the Fabric mix CDs
“Oh, that’s American Liz, she runs the label.”
El Larson in the present day.
You never know who you might meet at a party. A few Halloweens ago in Minneapolis, I met and wound up hanging out with a woman I’d vaguely recognized from parties past—Sarah Larson, who has become a good friend and regular party companion. And you never know who those party people might know, or be related to—in this particular case, Sarah’s sister El, in Los Angeles, who runs Heare, which offers “remedies for internal & external environments.” She was also a label manager for the Fabric mix CD series during its first sixteen months of existence. So you know I had to interview her for the Substack. Here it is. Enjoy!

MM: First of all, thank you for doing this. I’m really excited about this. It’s a really funny story, which I’m going to recount here for the record, because I met your sister about five years ago. And I think the two of us had seen each other around at raves in the later 90s. Maybe that was you as well?
EL LARSON: Definitely.
I ran into her on a Halloween at a club and we wound up club-hopping all night, instantly friends. The pandemic had its say in things, but the two of us go out and dance together occasionally, and it’s always fun. About a month ago, she texted me: “Did I ever tell you my sister worked on the Fabric mixes?” And my head exploded. So that’s we got here. Now, are you from the Twin Cities. Did you both grew up here?
Yeah. We actually grew up just outside of Monticello, between Monticello and St. Cloud. So we’re from: dirt road, no streetlights, small little lake, like eight miles off the freeway.
