BC036 - Five Mixes: The Lot Radio, April-May 2023

A while back now, in a paid-only post, I featured a September 2022 episode of Aspirin-Mint, a show co-DJ’ed by Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley and Brazilian musician Paulo Kishimoto. I vowed to listen to a newer episode, which I did: April 28. The episodes do tend to unfold in similar way—it’s a college-radio show, basically, so a lot of soft-to-loud, delightful genre juxtapositions, artfully deployed classics. But I probably won’t devote six posts to Veneno, the Sao Paolo station on which Aspirin-Mint appears. The Lot Radio, in Brooklyn, is a lot more likely a topic for that kind of deep dive—which, let me point out, is not where this week’s clutch came from. These five, which are all over the place musically, each came up just from trawling, not as an intentional survey, though they make a whole month in the station’s life seem like particularly enticing. Clearly, May 17 alone paid dividends.
