I listen to and like hip-hop, but I don’t write about it very often. Partly that’s because I know other musical types better, partly because I wrote some rap reviews in the early 2010s on insane deadlines that I had no business doing; anybody who hates me based on them has the right to it. But when I collated my physical holdings, I was struck by the handful of hip-hop mixes I held onto—they say a lot about my tastes, and about its limits.
