When it came time to file my Pazz & Jop Critics’ Poll ballot in 2015, I had a readymade group of titles at the ready. I can’t remember which entity I’d first made the list for, but I’m positive it was someone who paid, and it had to have been ready by, at the earliest, the end of November. Here is another date worth noting: I had begun writing a month-to-month Top 10 Mixes column for Beatport that spring. Hence, I pulled my selections exclusively from the columns I’d already turned in. This, gasp, was how the sausage got made that year. And looking back, I couldn’t be more pleased about it. This was precisely what I was listening to that year, and while another accounting might expand it some, I’m comfortable with its limits. It’s a top-ten list; it’s limited already.
