I wrote the following introduction in 2014, when I first re-ran this item on an old Tumblr:
I worked as the music editor of Seattle Weekly from July 2003 to February 2006. In that time I ran a lot of pieces I’m proud of and a few that are best left in the mist of time. My emphasis wasn’t on local music—I figured, correctly, that The Stranger had that on lock, though I certainly didn’t do enough in that department, something I look back on with some regret (especially as someone who has largely abandoned the job of critic in favor of the job of historian).
The most fun I had was putting together big multi-writer packages around year-end and Bumbershoot. This is one we did in a far less specifically targeted way. I pitched it as a cover, the brass hemmed and hawed over putting it there, so I said fuck it and slotted it as that week’s music section. Naturally they decided at the last minute to put it on the cover, leaving me something like three days to put together an actual music section. Good times.
